It was at the tail end of the 1980s that a small group of people stood chatting in a Pewsey car park. They had all just attended an interesting lecture on the GWR by the renowned railway enthusiast David Hyde, co-author of the book GWR to Devizes.
The group debated their recent experience and agreed that such enjoyable events could be continued if they formed a local society to promote an interest in railways. They agreed to canvass support for such a society and duly met at the Greyhound Public House in Pewsey in 1989. The tunrout and enthusiasm was far greater than had been expected, with more than 15 people in attendance, and from that early back room meeting, the PVRS was formed. As the membership grew, so did the need for a more spacious venue to host the meetings, and the society transferred to the nearby Royal Oak establishment. Meetings were held there until a few years later when the landlord, a serious railway enthusiast, unfortunately moved on to other things.
After a second short spell back at The Greyhound, the society was offered the use of Woodborough Social Club, and has been meeting there ever since on every second tuesday in the calendar month. With more than 20 years of meetings, outings, social gatherings, and newsletters behind us, and an enthusiastic membership the society continues to go from strength to strength.
